Remote servers and SSH

Coming soon

How to put agents to work on another machine, over SSH or with an always-on Taller server.

The Taller doesn't tie you to your laptop. Each workspace runs somewhere: on your computer, on a machine of yours that you reach over SSH, or on a computer that keeps the Taller always on.

Ways of working

  • On your computer: agents, terminals and browser run on the same machine as the app. It's the usual setup for everyday work.

  • Over SSH: the code and the agents live on another machine (a Mac mini, a Linux server, a more powerful computer) and the editor and diff stay on your laptop.

  • Taller server: a computer of yours keeps the Taller running; your laptop or your phone connect to it as a screen. Agents keep working even if you close your laptop.

Working over SSH

  1. Open Settings → SSH and press Add target.

  2. Type the server, user, port and, if you want, your key. You can also choose a server from your ~/.ssh/config file.

  3. Press Test to check the connection and then Save. The remote machine needs to have git.

  4. When you create a workspace, choose that target in Run on.

The Taller creates the worktree on the remote machine and launches the agents there; file changes are mirrored on your laptop so the editor and the diff feel local.

Connection security

The Taller verifies the server's identity with your known_hosts files. If the server's key changes without warning, it refuses the connection before asking for a password. Your key passphrases are kept only in memory while the app is open.

If the connection drops

A disconnection doesn't stop the agents. The Taller reconnects and shows you what happened in the meantime. Even if you close the app, remote terminals stay alive until you close them yourself.

Taller server

The simplest way:

  1. Install the Taller and a private network like Tailscale on both computers, with the same account.

  2. On the one that will act as the server, turn it on as a server in its settings and generate an access link.

  3. On your laptop, choose Add server and paste the link.

On a Linux server without a screen, you start it from the terminal:

dsa-taller serve

Install your agents and sign in to them on the server: your laptop's session isn't copied over on its own.

You can also follow your agents from your phone. See the Taller on your phone.
